Well, had to come out of the studio to write this short essay so here goes...

Unfortunately the days of the 'old' Source Direct and Rupert's 'Seventh Samuri' are long gone. The years of 95-96 were amazing from a breakbeat and atmospheric soul point of view and most of those records by Sd, Hidden Agenda, Seba, Skanna, Futurebound, Crystl and Rupert are better than ANYTHING '97 to '04 in my 'personal' opinion. The beats then were chopped up expertly from all corners but they still maintained their 'linear control' which is important in todays d&b.

But alas it was indeed a long time ago I dont expect the new school of producers to know a certain glorious d&b past as some cite Ram records as their duck-breaking artist/label into d&b whereas mine was 4Hero, Ibiza Records and Genaside 2 etc.. ('Narra Mine' - Awesome !!!)

1997 was a year where everyone bar a few left the d&b breakbeat scene exodus style and fell into a tunnel of noise, and simple 'toni basel' beats. I refused to go down that route as I couldn't connect with it as my roots are based around funk breakbeats (which are the real ROOTS of ANY break in d&b). I thought fuck it, It doesn't matter if I'm the only one, as long as I write and get the chance to release the music I want to make, I simply dont give a shit.

Reinforced was the label that stood by me back then and still does today. The fact that they are just about to approach their 200th d&b release (yep 200!!) commands fucking respect. I for one owe then alot.

2000 onwards and still not many producers making the stuff I love. I knew I was fighting a losing battle but I kept doing my sound regardless. I will never conform to what.

But as everything goes in cycles, I've been waiting to see the breakbeat style I love to re-appear. I've seen ragga jungle come in-out, in- out, in-out of the d&b scene like a merry-go-round and now at last some new young producers are emerging creating good breakbeat stuff.

Which brings me onto the sound today. Yes it isn't new, nothing ever is as the cycles rotate, but it is different (even if you compare it the last 4 years of d&b) and there is proof that people enjoy making this style of d&b. People are moaning, and there has been a 6 year gap to me !!!! amazing...

I for one am impressed with the new producers with their own individual sound coming through. I see real 'identity's' which is so important and in turn is the real shelf-life for the artist. I don't hear any watered down music (and if I did - then I would create a REAL fuss). I hear new and old breaks that haven't been sampled for donkey's years, being eq'd well and programmed with real passion and not sacrificing on the bass.

For all the haters on this style I don't give a shit and nor does everyone else making it either, but everyone is entitled to voice their personal opinion which is why this forum is great.

When the so-called 'attention' dies down - which it will do, the foundations are there and everyone will continue to do this style of d&b regardless of unit sales, or current popularity. We all know this style will never be as popular as the current d&b sounds and sales, but one thing for sure is I won't have to wait till 2010 for the next breakbeat installment (I'll be 24 then).
