DFA, the pioneering New York label and production duo at the fore of neo-electro, has announced plans to release a brand new compilation of 12-inch tracks they've both released and produced by Christmas. The new set will collect every vinyl-only club single they've released since last year's exceptionally well-received DFA Compilation #1, and will showcase not one, but two discs of singles-- plus a third CD mixed by label co-owner Tim Goldsworthy and Tim Sweeney of Beats in Space.

The small but seriously solid coterie of bands appearing on the three-disc comp includes DFA mainstays like Black Dice, LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, and The Juan Maclean, as well as newer additions to the roster like J.O.Y., Pixeltan, and Black Leotard Front, whose first single for the label-- the 15+ minute-long "Casual Friday"-- is slated for an October 26th release on 12-inch, and leads off the set. Also available here is "Bellhead", the DFA's first-ever collaboration with recently reunited 1980s NYC electro freax Liquid Liquid. James Murphy, one-half of the DFA production team and mastermind behind LCD Soundsystem, called working with Liquid Liquid "one of the biggest honors of my life. They have the best sense of who they are than almost any band I've ever met."

"Working with a legend is absolutely terrifying," adds Goldsworthy, "because Liquid Liquid are one of the things we turn to when we're listening to stuff, a root band. They still use the same instruments and sound exactly the same, and it's difficult to produce because... they have a pretty faultless back catalog. Am I gonna be the person to put an acid bassline on Liquid Liquid and be hated by thousands? I don't think so. But it's a complete honor and I'm quite happy to die now."

DFA Compilation #2, as it is so descriptively titled, will be released on November 2nd to the delight of beer-stained dancing shoes everywhere. And don't be misled by the term "previously released", like this is some half-ass attempt at filling in the empty space between proper albums, or a new Punk-O-Rama edition. If you don't have a turntable and a vinyl fetish, you most likely haven't heard these songs yet, which makes it a valuable addition to all but the craziest DFA devotees' iPods. And did I mention you can dance to LCD Soundsystem's "Yeah" in three different versions? Enjoy:

In related news, the DFA imprint is said to have inked what one insider called a "mega-bucks deal" with major label EMI. Goldsworthy cops to the partnership in the DFA Compilation #2 press release-- which has recently been just a rumor-- mentioning that the two labels have finally "got their shit together." As to what this means for the future of the label, no one's talking quite yet, but it would seem that better distribution and more funding is likely to be just the tip of the iceberg.
