Egy kis bió:
DJ /rupture (real name: Jace Clayton) is a producer and D.J. born in America and based in Barcelona, Spain. Rupture is best known for technically flawless, endlessly creative 3-turntable mixing that British mag N.M.E. described as a "dynamic bootytronic mix n' mash session... high-minded confrontations between hiphop, Afrobeat, noise, ragga, digitals and chart R&B”.
DJ /rupture is also an accomplished studio producer with a number of high-profile compilation appearances and remixes. His debut album (as producer) will be released on Tigerbeat6 this fall. The album is called SPECIAL GUNPOWDER, and features 16 original tracks and 12 vocalists, including reggae legend Sister Nancy, Junior Cat, Arnaud Michniak of Programme, Max Turner (formerly of the Puppetmastaz), and many more.
Rupture captured the world's imagination on the strength of Gold Teeth Thief (Soot/Violent Turd), a “stunning, globe-trotting, three-turntable mix" that "captures the spirit of the best bootleg mixes--bumping, brash, and without borders,” according to the album's 4-star review in VIBE. Freely distributed over the internet, more than 40,000 people have downloaded the mix from Rupture's website,
www.negrophonic.com.
Gold Teeth Thief made DJ /rupture one of URB’s Next 100 Artists to blow up in 2002 and earned him the title “best DJ in the world" from leading German music magazine DE:BUG. For once, the hype is not hyperbole but the just reward for a powerfully syncretic musical imagination, nurtured on the one hand by New York's vital urban music scene and by notions of the African diaspora on the other.
Rupture followup mix, Minesweeper Suite, was released on Tigerbeat6 in 2002, and went on to receive rave reviews everywhere from Entertainment Weekly ("A-") to Vogue, while connecting with the global underground of DJs, beatheads, and bedroom producers. Rupture has done two legendary Peel Sessions on BBC 1 radio. An incendiary live DJ, Rupture has performed in over 20 countries, from Slovenia to Japan to the United Arab Emirates.
*****
Rupture grew up in Boston, spending summers with relatives in musical hotspot Virginia Beach. He attended Harvard University and moved to New York City after graduation. Here he honed his DJ skills in the city's fertile music scene, performing alongside hiphop, reggae, and drum & bass DJs as well as in experimental/avant-garde settings. Here Clayton joined Atlantic Records' Wax Poetic, fronted by 8-time Grammy-winner Norah Jones (a few months before she became hyper-famous). He toured extensively with the band, adding his unique turntablism to their live acid jazz sound. Rupture expatriated to Spain in 2001. In 2003 he performed nearly 100 gigs worldwide, over 60 of them opening for Kid606 on the Paws Across the World Tigerbeat6 label tour.
