JET SETTING BUDAPEST
Budapest is not as cheap as it once was! Prices are similar to Berlin - reasonable but not super cheap. Buda is posher and older, Pest is young and fun. Hungary was a Communist country until their revolution in 1989 - they are still catching up with the rest of Europe, so be prepared for that.

Hungary is not in the Euro-they have the Forint- it’s not worth a lot- reminiscent of Italy’s Lire

Hotels: We stayed in the Kempinski modern – elegant good service plus wireless LAN internet (a must!). The Spa and wellness area was being renovated (opening march 05) but we were allowed to go next door to Le Meridien Hotel to use theirs- small but modern and nice Le Meridien is also a lovely hotel – older and grander in Style than Kempinski Le Taverna Hotel and Art Otel also looked good.
Daytime: Hungarians are addicted to coffee - they drink it non-stop all day. Consequently they have some gorgeous coffee houses - the ones worth checking out: Gerbeaud( vorosmartyter7 ) - 140 year old building the best coffee in Budapest and cakes to die for. Central ( karolyi mihaly utca 9) - we ad dinner here - the „Central salad“ is very good. The New York (Erzsebet korvt 9-11) - neo baroque tower, the-top-wonderfulness in here and lethal espressos. Good hangover hangout.
Budapest is also famed for it’s Spas and thermal baths. The Gellert Baths (kelenhegyi utca 4) in the Hotel Gellert (a grand old hotel in Buda) are the most famous and worth a look fort he art nouveau architecture - but don’t expect anything too modern! No fancy sauna or steam rooms in here plus very matronly, brusque staff. The Kiraly Baths (fo, utca 84) are a Turkish monument and popular with the gay crowd. These baths date back to 1570.
By night: In Hungary the scenes that were big in the UK over five years ago are huge here - drum’n’bass and progressive house being the main tunes. Pacha - the famous club is here typical red Pacha venue and a hugely up-for it crowd. It was hands-in- the air progressive house all the way. A38 - a club/bar restaurant on a ship. Cool location. Lot’s of live bands here. (life music and rock a big part of the scene here) Trafo Bar Tango - our best experience little underground club with a German DJ, Shirkhan, playing bootlegs, mixing Mylo, Missey Elliot, Beastie Boys, daft punk and most amusingly the theme from Ghostbusters. The kids loved it.
Shopping: To be really honest, Budapest is not the place for shopaholics. They have only had designer stores for about five years and there aren’t so many. The international chains stores like Zara and Mango are here though and are providing some inspiration. The Vati Utca is he main shopping street- there are great beauty stores along here like MAC, Clarins and Lancome. Getting dressed up to go clubbing is not really a priority yet her, the guys especially have to try harder- it’s just grey, black and white tee-shirt’s everywhere! Still, there is a refreshing innocence and unpretentiousness about the clubbing scene. It’s not about what you are wearing and striking a pose - in fact you’d be laughed at!
